Writer submission on when I Became a HAM

It was 1985 and Steve and I had only been married 2 years when he wanted me to study for my ham license. He has been a ham since 1975. So I started the cassette code tapes, highlighted all the correct answers in the ‘NOVICE’ study guide and when we went to Montgomery hamfest I took my test. Nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, I aced the written. Then came the 5WPM code…the man read from an index card then started the code tape. Within just about 3 words I realized the code being sent was exactly what he just read on the index card!!! WHEWWW, I passed and left the room in tears of joy to tell my very proud hubby I was a ‘HAM’ Since then I have gone on to the Extra level and believe you me, I will never let that license expire!!! I’ve participated in storm spotting, search and rescue training, bike rides, races, many field day events, many many hamfests and even called ‘the net’ while driving when no one was available to call it. I’ve assisted in raising towers, antenna’s, installing repeaters and installing radio’s in vehicles. Its been an experience I will never forget. Thanks for reading my story, N4VCN
