I’m using a FT-891 as a base station now with satisfactory results. Being a new General I don’t know what positive features a larger base station in the $1500.00 price range would give me. Is it worth spending the money to only achieve a 5 or 10% gain in performance. What would that performance be? If any. Or should I invest in a better antenna? I’m limited in that becasue of the HOA. I’m using an Atas 120A antenna now and I think that I’m satisfied with its performance.
@Gene_Hirschman A different radio would not be necessary. You can still enjoy using your FT-891 with a completely different antenna for your HOA environment, such as the Chameleon MPAS-2.0, Comet CHV-5X, or the Radiowavz ZRW-EFH40-20-10, which is only 40 feet long and can be hidden among trees. For convenience, the ATAS-120 is the best solution for an HOA home. Adding radials as a counterpoise is essential for achieving the best performance from the antenna.

Personally, Particularly since you are already using an ATAS -120A for youe FT-891. If you purchase a FT-991A you will then have a great base station radio, 160 meters thru 70 cm ALL MODE capability, your current ATAS-120A antenna will work with the FT-991A
