TS-890S and IC-PW2

Can the TS-890S and IC-PW2 operate together? If so, how is that done?

Yes, the can work with the
linear amplifier. The IC-PW2

is designed to be compatible with non-Icom radios, including the

TS-890S

, by using a standard physical keying connection and CAT control for automatic band switching.

Here are the key points for connectivity:

  • Standard Connections: Both devices use standard amateur radio connections (SO-239 for antennas, RCA phono for PTT keying, and D-connector for CAT control). You will need appropriate cables, such as a 7-pin DIN to RCA keying cable for theTS-890S
, to interface the two units.

  • Automatic Band Switching: The TS-890S
has a D-connector that outputs the necessary CAT information for automatic band switching with compatible linear amplifiers. The

890S can receive this band data via its own input ports to automatically switch bands in conjunction with the transceiver.

  • Input Power: TheTS-890S has a maximum output of 100W, which is within the 890s’s maximum driving power input limit of 100W, preventing accidental overdriving of the amplifier.
  • ALC (Automatic Level Control): An ALC connection should be made between the two units to ensure theTS-890S
output power is automatically reduced as needed to prevent overdriving the PW2 amplifier, protecting both pieces of equipment.

Thanks. By the way, I did search google but couldn’t find any definitive answer like yours.

Mark……Doug gave you a superb reply! I’m sitting here with the 890s advanced manual, and well for me, it’s quite daunting! Doug has used the PW1, I have limited experience with the 890! There is an 890 Facebook group…….might get suggestions from them. Excellent rig, good choice, Thanks for contacting us

I used Google AI…Just happy I was able to help you. I knew my old PW1 well but intermixing manufacturers was what got me. Ur gonna love that PW once you get it hooked up correctly. Thank you so much for giving us the chance to serve you.
