Suggestion for Technician/General Class Radio

Hello All,

I am looking for the sweet spot in a budget-friendly ham radio mobile or base station that is upgradable from Technician to General. I have my Technician License and am upgrading to General soon. I am looking for a radio that I can grow with as I move up the license and skill ladder.

Thank you for any support and/or suggestions.

@Andrew_Harbert based on what you have said, I would recommend the Yaesu FT-891. It gives you flexibility of using as a mobile or base. I would get an Intellitron WA-1080 G5RV Dipole Antenna, 80-10M antenna that can grow with you. You can use the radio and antenna on 10M while you are a tech. You would need a power supply at home Samlex SEC-1235M.

You can add an Yaesu ATAS-120 to use the FT-891 as mobile.

If you haven’t already, I recommend you join a club near you. The other amateur operators most likely can help you to learn by their experiences of what works best in your specific area and circumstances.

Thank you so much for your sage advice! I will look into that option!

Andrew
