will this fit my yaesu ft4x? It has 2 jacks on the side (speaker & mic) - differently spaced than my baofeng.
do i need an adapter?

No the HTH Y will not work with your FT-4. The HTH Y has only one connector, while your FT4 radio requires two connectors. The Yaesu SSM-512B or the SSM-17B speaker mic will work with your FT-4…they both have the Vertex 2 pin connector. I am not aware of any adapter that could be used.
