Amateur-radio lightning protection

OK, you just got that shiney new or used radio. Are you running coax straight from the antenna to the radio? Not a good idea. You must ground the station to keep lightning and RFI out of your shack. This requires you have two lengths of coaxial. One from the antenna out side to a Ground where the coax comes into the house…this is called a lightning arrestor. Polyphaser.com has been the preimenent author of grounding specs since I’ve been a ham. Here is our polyphaser line.

I use this one: Polyphaser IS-50UX-C0 Lightning Arrestor GigaParts.com

You can ground that to your house ground your service company installed when running power to where power comes into the house OR obtain a 8’ copper clad ground rod at Home depot and they will rent you a hammer drill to install it? Much easier than 16# sledge hammer?. The hardware that comes with the ground rod will allow you to mount the polyphaser. You then run another piece of coax from the polypaser into the house and to the radio equipment.. You can use the ground bus shown here for inside the house so you can ground ALL radios and accessories to ground. ALPHA DELTA GBWM Ground Bus Wall Mount for Coax Surge Protectors GigaParts.com
I use the following ground braid to make sure each piece is grounded to that 8’ ground rod outside or inside. Search results for ground braid GigaParts.com

I would suggest a trip to Polyphaser.com as they explain the ground process in great detail. They do commercial 100 KW broadcast station.
